On a brisk January morning, I stepped into the hushed warmth of Pregones Theater in the South Bronx. I grew up just right across the bridge from the theater in Washington Heights, so I felt an immediate sense of belonging when I entered the space. The intimate theater buzzed with the presence of native New Yorkers, each voice carrying the daring rhythms of the enduring city. There’s something deeply comforting about a room filled with overlapping roots, where stories are personal even before they are told. Pepatián’s 15th annual Bronx Artists Showcase and Conversation promised an eclectic tapestry of movement, words, and sound –– an impassioned celebration of cultural memory and identitarian expression that only the Bronx could inspire.
