RICHARD RIVERA

RRichard Rivera is a Bronx born artist based in NYC. He has experience performing, teaching and choreographing in the U.S. and internationally. His primary dance training is from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center with additional Classical training from Peridance Studios and David Howard Ballet Studio. Richard was a member of Ailey II under the direction of Sylvia Waters. He has also worked under the direction of Arthur Aviles, Fred Benjamin, Donald Byrd, Sean Curran, Earl Mosely, Reggie Wilson, Shen Wei, Kevin Wynn and other notable choreographers in the New York dance community. In 2002 Richard founded PHYSUAL, a dance company that uses movement as a vehicle for developing ideas and performance work. PHYSUAL has served as a vehicle for Richard to explore his choreographic voice and express his movement point of view through structural aesthetic. During 2004-05' Richard was an artist in residence at Tribeca Performing Arts Center. After his two-year residency he was commissioned by TPAC to assist in the development of an arts exchange with P.S. 104 in lower Manhattan to co-create a theater piece titled "Dance Soup". The focus of "Dance Soup" was story telling through movement/dance for young audiences. PHYSUAL has also had the honor of being presented by Jacob's Pillow as part of their Inside/Out series in 05'. In 2009 Richard was invited to be a guest artist at Hope College in Holland Michigan. During his time at Hope he conducted classes for the dance department and created a work on the students. Also in 09' he was one of the choreographers presented both Harlem Stage in the E-Moves (emerging/evolving) series and Topaz/Queens Museum passport series.
