CHRISTAL BROWN

Christal Brown is the Founding Artistic/Executive of Inspirit, a dance company as well as a choreographer, educator, performer, writer, activist.
Christal is a native of Kinston, North Carolina and received her BFA in dance and minor in Business from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her MFA from Long Island University in New Media Art and Performance. Brown has toured nationally and internationally with Chuck Davis' African-American Dance Ensemble, Andrea E. Woods/Souloworks, Gesel Mason Performance Projects, The Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, The Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and Urban Bush Women. Within these prestigious companies Brown honed her skills as a performer, community specialist, and educator. Brown has since gone on to serve as the Founding Artistic Director of INSPIRIT, a performance ensemble and educational conglomerate dedicated to bringing female choreographers and performers together to collaborate and show new work. Brown strives to expand the views of women of all ages while being a constant source of inspiration to her audiences, students, and company members. In addition to INSPIRIT Brown has enjoyed enormous success as a choreographer for numerous collegiate institutions and repertory companies across the country. Through the growth of INSPIRIT, Brown has also been able to launch a nationwide youth initiative for teen girls called Project: BECOMING as well as create a standardized dance training module called Liquid Strength. Currently, Brown is a resident artist of Tribeca Performing Arts Center as well as a Visiting Lecturer in Dance at Middlebury College. Combining her athleticism, creativity, love for people, and knack for teaching Brown continues to share and create works that redefine the art of dance and challenge the structure of the field.
