| PEPON OSORIO
Visual Artist MacArthur Fellow and co-founder of Pepatian Pepon Osorio’s visual vocabulary uses multiple ideas, concepts and a plethora of fragments to evoke a fluid discourse based in the Latino and more specifically Puerto Rican experience, and particularly in the nostalgia and desire to reclaim a rich foliage and tropical beauty lost. The empowering act of reclaiming symbols and remnants of a resilient cultural reveal a body of knowledge that stimulates viewers to question and re-examine their core values. His artistic foresight and commitment is evident. A few highlights of his 20-year career include a major retrospective in 1991 at El Museo del Barrio, inclusion in the 1993 Whitney Biennale, a 2000 retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Puerto Rico and his 1999 award of a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship. Garnering international acclaim, many of these works were first shows in neighborhood storefronts. Osorio changes the pattern of viewership, creating through his art, accessibility for all universes and audiences, thereby further transforming standard museum practices. In their totality, the repetition of hundreds or thousands of images, objects and narrative symbols conform to posit numerous metaphorical interpretations and readings coalescing in a celebration of life and humanity – the true center of Osorio’s work.
