OUT OF LA NEGRURA

Sita Frederick, Anita Garcia (aka Rokafella), Marion Ramirez and Awilda Sterling-Duprey are four Latina artists who have all previously created work for Pepatian¹s South Bronx-based performance project, the Bronx Artist Spotlight series.  Their work references a variety of Afro-Caribbean-Latino dance forms (Orisha, Salsa, Hip-Hop, Afro-Cuban, post-modern) and dance theater.

OUT OF LA NEGRURA is a one-hour presentation with each choreographer showing 10-15minutes of work.  Audience Q&A to follow. Residency activities include panel discussions, dance workshops and community outreach.

Their work speaks to Latino and non-Latino audiences alike. Each is interested in reaching into mainstream America to show the full spectrum of Afro-Caribbean-Latino experience. Latin culture is not just what is in popular media. These artists feel their Latino dance roots steeped in urban life are ready for greater interaction with people around the country so that all continue to exchange and grow beyond any limitations. They incorporate other disciplines into their work: visual art and installation (Awilda), text and installation (Sita), singing and spoken word (Rokafella), and all are gifted teachers.

OUT OF LA NEGRURA is a chance to introduce four unique Latina choreographers to new audiences and explore an Afro-Caribbean-Latino world from their very contemporary perspective.

Pepatian, a twenty-year old South Bronx-based arts organization dedicated to creating, presenting and supporting contemporary Latino art, would support the project¹s booking and further development.
